Intimate Partner Violence is surging in light of Covid-19-related Stay At Home orders, leaving victims isolated, cut-off from support networks, and trapped in unsafe situations.
The #SignalForHelp campaign launched this week from the Women’s Funding Network and the Canadian Women’s Foundation. Covid-19 created a critical need for a widely recognized, discrete, way a survivor could reach out for help. #SignalForHelp gives survivors of violence who are trapped at home with an abuser a discreet way to communicate (via video chat or Facetime) that they want assistance, without leaving a digital trace.
“This is about offering a new tool for survivors, but it is also about teaching people who want to help, how to do so in a way that protects the safety and agency of the survivor,” the Women’s Funding Network explained.
Now more than ever, we have to be vigilant and look out for each other.
Remember: If you see the signal, only intervene *safely* keeping survivors’ wishes in mind. It is important not to take any action that will put survivors in danger. If possible, call them to ask if you can be a part of their safety plan and if there is something you can do for them.
