This is what we know so far about the developing revenge porn scandal in New Jersey:
A 16 year old boy(B) in West Orange, NJ had sexual and nude images of his ex-girlfriend, a 17 year old girl(G1) from Little Falls, NJ. B sent eight images of G1 to a 16 year old girl (G2) from Woodland Park, NJ. G2 then distributed these images, posting them on social media sites and showing them to other people. All the distribution was without the consent of G1.
It seems that G2 had distributed and posted sexual and nude pictures and videos of other underage people in the past.
B and G2 are being charged with distributing child pornography. Will they also be charged with revenge porn? NJ is, after all, one of the growing numbers of states that make it illegal to distribute sexual and nude photographs and videos of another person without that persons consent.
Will the other victims of G2’s behavior come forward? What will law enforcers do to protect G1’s privacy during this investigation?
This is a cautionary tale demonstrating that when something goes viral, the middlemen and middlewomen are not immune from liability and culpability.
