An Attack on Everything We Hold Dear

The NYT editorial “Killing of Police Tests Promise of ‘One City‘” from December 22, 2014 is everything.

It looks at our wounded city and the murders of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, which Mayor de Blasio calls “‘an attack on everything we hold dear.'”  It also talks about how a deranged killer contaminated both our city’s peaceful protests and the injustices surrounding the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.  With the vengeful rhetoric about their deaths he published on social media, it makes this insane murderer part of the story.

Most heart-jerking is this: “No one wants to fall deeper into a grotesque cycle of grievance and vengeance. The answer to violence is love, as reflected in this statement from the grass-roots group #BlackLivesMatter, deploring the officers’ killings and calling for a ‘complete transformation of the ways we see and relate to one another.'”
