Today, Thursday June 16, the White House Gender Policy Council convenes the inaugural meeting of the Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse (“Task Force”).
At this first meeting, key White House staff including Vice President Kamala Harris and cabinet members of the Task Force will hear from survivors who have been impacted by online abuse and harassment and receive recommendations from survivors as well as from experts, law enforcement, prosecutors, and victim advocates.
Carrie Goldberg will explain the chilling indifference displayed by tech companies whose platforms enabled or encouraged heinous abuses against our clients and illuminate the need for government leadership to address online harms.
Two former clients of C.A. Goldberg, PLLC, Matthew Herrick and Francesca Rossi will also share testimonies and recommendations based on their experiences of horrendous and extreme violence due to the abuse of technology – which neither our criminal justice system nor legal system protected them from.
The work of the Task Force:
The Task Force will produce recommendations for the Federal and state governments, tech platforms, schools, and other public and private entities to prevent and address technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
Their focus will be on the nexus between online misogyny and radicalization to violence, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
Recommendations will focus on:
- Increasing support for survivors of online harassment and abuse
- Expanding research to better understand the impact and scope of the problem
- Enhancing prevention, including prevention focused on youth
- Strengthening accountability for offenders and platforms.
